Sugar on My Grapefruit- Ahhhhh this one is so special.

An unintentional love note to a few of the women in my life. No predetermined design, just me and my palette and paint knives and a quiet afternoon and the thoughts that began to drift once I began.

When I was a young girl my grandmother had two yellow ceramic statues in her living room - flamenco dancers forever captured mid stomp, twirl and dance. I used to lay on the floor and admire them and imagine myself in big beautiful yellow skirt twirling to the sounds of a Spanish guitar and snapping a set of castanets… That very specific shade of yellow is still my favorite color.

The citrus- an orange, a Meyer lemon and a grapefruit are also deep with meaning and love. My Nana had orange trees around her yard along with the biggest hydrangeas in her garden that I’ve ever seen! The sweet little Florida Oranges and Hydrangea are in memory of her. I can still hear her asking me if I’d like glass of sweet tea, poured in a real crystal glass.

The grapefruit is another nod to my Grandma, she taught me how to cut them open and sprinkle sugar on them to balance the tart and scoop the sweet tangy flesh out with a spoon.

And the antique roses, softest blush and so lovely remind me of my mama, and how we used to sing Paper Roses together and harmonize. They also remind me of a bottle of rose perfume she wore when I was a child. A little silver clock with roses on the face and a delicate rose inspired spray.

I could go on and on about the texture looking a bit like sugar in some places, or how the shadows near the vase are childlike scribbles that remind me of old etchings in the walls of my Nanas home… or how the blush reminds me of my grandmas’ cheeks and her very pretty soft hands…

I love everything about this piece. Its just so beautiful and filled with so much love.
